These Strawberries Will Change Your Life
For us, there is one strawberry that makes the rest irrelevant: Harry’s Berries are the indisputable best. They just taste like strawberries, which we know isn’t the most eloquent description. But, it’s true! You’ll just have to taste them to see what we mean.
This small, California-based farm has been growing unusual strawberry breeds since 1967. They specialize in Gaviota and Seascape varieties, but also dabble in oddities like Mara de Bois, which resemble small, super sweet Swiss Alpine berries. Though the farm’s not USDA certified, they use only organic practices and sell their berries perfectly ripe and ready to eat. We would tell you to use them immediately, but we don’t think that’ll be necessary. When we have them in the office, they rarely survive more than a minute or two.
Harry’s Berries is a farmer’s market darling in Southern California, but they’re not a household name here on the East Coast. That’s because the family decided to cease all wholesale operations in 1993. Baldor is the first purveyor to carry the berries in more than 20 years. We’re also the only source for them on the Eastern Seaboard. Our owner and CEO, TJ Murphy, found them by chance at California market and knew he couldn’t leave the state without them. After much perseverance and gentle nudging, he finally convinced the farm’s owners to start sending small amounts to NYC. A few years later, the program’s still going strong and shows no signs of slowing down.
